Lock-Tite Log Systems -- Product Information, Logs, bolts, seal, caulk, and everything else you need to build your log home.

Log Profiles & Stack Outs

The look or profile of a log is often one of the main deciding factors when deciding on which manufacturer or log type to buy. The profile that is milled on your logs is much more important than looks alone however; Whatever species, or profile of log you do select you should take the time to study the way it locks together. Tongue & Groove designs vary greatly from supplier to supplier and finding a log that is self-protecting is quite important. Each and every profile that we produce has a self-protecting design. It is also important to look for a self-protecting log that does not compromise its own integrity by creating a fragile drip-edge, some designs that do incorporate a rain drip mill this feature into the log in such a way that they must be packaged upside down to avoid breaking the drip edge during shipping & handling.

Overall stack height is just as important as the general profile of your log. Log stack heights vary depending on what company profiled the log, this is due to how the particular manufacturer acquires their timber. Some suppliers use timber that is nominal sized, this timber has already been planed & dressed once and is typically sold to lumberyards as construction materials. Manufacturers such as Lock-Tite have access to full sized timber that has not been milled and dressed down to lumberyard stock can offer profiles with much more mass and stack height.
The advantage to a larger stack-height is that it takes less of a larger product to complete the job. A 6 1/2" log would require 15 rows to achieve an 8' wall height while a 7 1/4" Log would only require 13 rows, depending on the size of the home the distance around the home two more times could save you thousands.
